Having been selected as the host for ASSITEJ’s 2018 Artistic Gathering, all eyes were on the China National Children’s Theatre for their Production of Three Monks being performed at the Baxter Theatre at the end of the Cradle.
Directed by Ernan Mao, with the script by Xing Mu, Three Monks uses Chinese Opera and Martial Arts to explore an ancient Chinese proverb that translates as “one boy is a boy, two boys is a half a boy, three boys is no boy”. Meaning that if everyone depends on others then nothing will be done, it is roughly equivalent to the English proverb “too many cooks spoil the broth”. The piece poetically explores themes of unity, cooperation, and the bond humanity has with the natural world.
