After watching a Performance of Johannesburg, South Africa’s Shakexperience’s adaption of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, directed by Neil Coppen, I asked Schoolchildren and their Teachers for their reactions to the piece. The wealth of positive responses is, in my opinion, an accurate reflection of the dynamic, thought provoking production by a fierce, energetic cast of women.
“It was amazing, they touched on so many topics Teenage Audiences would understand.”
“Themes of greed and bloodthirst […] It showed how we can be equal but there are different levels in Society.”
“It was brilliant. It was amazing. I enjoyed it. The comedy in it was nicely incorporated and I love it.”
“It kept the audience interested.”
“It was a really good show. It really opened my eyes to the perspective of the ‘Animal Farm’ and the dictatorship.”
“It was more than I expected, the story line was good.”
“As a Teacher, I just wanted to say ‘Animal Farm’ was so brilliant. The way it depicts that storyline into what we are experiencing today.
Our learners will be learning so much from what they’ve seen and lots of what I watched reminded me of what is happening right now in South Africa.”
“The use of props was amazing. I was amazed by everything – it exceeded my expectations.”
“The theatrical conventions were very clearly thought out. It was made clear to the entire audience what the show was referencing. It was breathtaking.”
“Hilarious.”
“There was a deeper message at work throughout the show. I would definitely recommend it.”
